Kristin Dimitrova

Kristin Dimitrova was born in Sofia. She graduated from Sofia University in English Studies and is currently a lecturer at the Department of Foreign Languages. She was editor of “Art Trud” (the weekly arts and culture supplement of the “Trud Daily”). She is author of the following collections of poems Trinadesetoto dete na Yakov [Jacob’s Thirteenth Child] (1992), Obraz pod leda [A Face under the Ice] (1997; 2002), Zatvoreni figuri [Closed Figures] (1998), Litsa s prepleteni ezitsi [Faces with Twisted Tongues] (1998; 2002), Popravka na talismani [Talisman Repairs] (2001; 2002), Kristin Dimitrova - Selected Poems (2002, works in Bulgarian and Greek and English translation, translated into Greek by Panos Strathoyannis), A Visit to the Clockmaker (2005), Horata s fenerite [The People with the Lanterns] (2008), Gradinata na ochakvaniyata i otsreshtnata vrata [The Garden of Expectations and the Opposite Door] (2012). Dimitrova’s short stories have been collected in the volumes Lyubov i smart pod krivite krushi [Love and Death under the Crooked Pear Trees] (2004), Tainiyat pat na mastiloto [The Secret Way of the Ink] (2010). In 2006 she was the winner in the anonymous national competition of Publishing house “Ink” for new novel (the competition was part of the international program “The Myths” of the Scottish publishing house Canongate) which led to the publication of her novel Sabazius (2007).
Kristin Dimitrova also writes non-fiction (Taro: vratite navatre [Tarot: the Doors Within], 2002), as well as scripts: Kozelat [The Goat] (co-authored with the film director Georgi Dyulgerov, based on Yordan Radichkov’s work) and Etien [Etienne] (co-authored with the film director Svetla Tsotsorkova and based on Dimitrova’s eponymous short story, 2007). She is editor and translator of Anagrama [The Anagram], a selection of John Donne’s poetry (1999). She is recipient of a number of poetry awards: of the newspapers “Trud” (1996) and “Vek 21” (1997), of Publishing house “Ab” (The Golden Metaphor, 1997), Publishing house “Zhanet 45” (Ivan Nikolov Award, 1997), of the Association of Bulgarian Writers (2003). Among her numerous awards are the team second place in the Poetry Olympics for Performing Poets, Stockholm (1998), third place in the Fantasy Short Story Contest by “Argus” publishers (2001), the Trud Daily Award for Short Story (2003), Ritsar na knigata [Knight of the Book] award for “journalists with significant contribution to promoting Bulgarian book publishing” (2006). She received the award of the Union of Bulgarian Translators for her translations of John Donne’s poetry (2004); in 2006 the script for Kozelat won the first place in the Competition for New Feature Films of the National Committee for the Arts. Kristin Dimitrova’s poetry and prose have been translated into over 20 languages and are included in a number of literary anthologies published in Austira, Belarus, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Canada, China, Croatia, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Hungary, Iceland, Ireland, Italy, Lithuania, Macedonia, Mexico, the Netherlands, Romania, Russia, Slovenia, Serbia, Poland, Sweden, Turkey, the UK and the US.
Dimitrova writes in English or translates her own work from Bulgarian. Her work has also been rendered in English by Gregory O’Donoghue and Vladimir Trendafilov.
