Georgi Gospodinov was born in Yambol. He graduated from Sofia University in Bulgarian Language and Literature. In 2005 he completed his PhD thesis on “Vaptsarov’s Poetry in the Media-cultural Context of the 1930s and 1940s”.
He has written a number of books, among them are: Lapidarium (1992), Chereshata na edin narod [Cherry Tree of One People] (1996), Estestven roman [Natural Novel] (1999), I drugi istorii [And Other Stories] (2001), Pisma do Gaustin [Letters to Gaustin] (2003), Baladi i razpadi [Ballads and Maladies] (2007), Apokalipsisat idva v 6 vecherta [Apocalypse Comes at 6 pm] (2010), Fizika na tagata [Physics of Sorrow] (2012), Nevidimite krizi [Invisible Crises] (2013), I vsichko stana luna [Everything Turned into Moon] (2013). He has published over 300 essays and articles in cultural journals and newspapers. He is co-author in two publications which left a mark on the aesthetic atmosphere of the 1990s in Bulgaria – Bulgarska antologiya. Nahsta poeziya ot Gerova nasam (1998) and Bulgarska hristomatiya (1995). Gospodinov is also a well-established cultural critic and researcher, mostly through his books Poeziya i mediya. Kino, radio i reklama u Vaptsarov i poetite na 40-te godini na 20 vek [Poetry and Media. Cinema, Radio, and Advertising with Vaptsarov and the Poets of the 1940s] (2005), Inventory Book of Socialism (2006, co-authored) and I’ve Lived Socialism. 171 Personal Stories (2006, editor, preface author). Due to the translations of Natural Novel and Letters to Gaustin into many languages, he gained considerable international acclaim and popularity.
Georgi Gospodinov is recipient of a number of national awards, such as the annual Ikar Award of the Union of Bulgarian Actors for Best Drama for his play D.J. (2004), Zlatno pero for his contribution to Bulgarian culture (2004), the National Hristo G. Danov Award for Literature (2012), the National prize Tsveteto na Helikon for best-selling Bulgarian book (2012), the National Award for Best Bulgarian Novel (2013), among others. In 2008 he won the writer-in-residence fellowship of the Berliner Künstlerprogramm, DAAD.
The works of Georgi Gospodinov have been translated into English by Alexis Levitin and Magdalena Levy, Zornitsa Hristova, Angela Rodel, I. Nedkova and Miglena Nikolchina, Dimiter Kenarov, Kalina Filipova, and Vladimir Levchev.
