(1933 - 2008)
Konstantin Pavlov was born in the village of Vitoshko, near Pernik. He studied Law at the University of Sofia. He has been an editor at Radio Sofia (1957-1959), in the Balgarski pisatel Publishing house (1961-1962; 1964-1965), in the Literaturen forum newspaper (1963), and Multifilm (1965-1966). From 1966 up to 1975 he was banned from working and publishing. In 1975 he was allowed to get a job in Balgarska kinematografiya [Bulgarian Cinematography]. That year Pavlov was made member of Union of Bulgarian Film Activists and in 1980 he joined the Union of Bulgarian Writers.

Konstantin Pavlov is the author of lyrics, plays, and scripts. His works were published in the following books: Satiri [Satires] (1960), Stihove [Poems] (1961), Stari neshta [Old Things] (1983), Poyavyavane [Appearance] (1989), Agonio sladka [Sweet Agony] (1991), Ubiystvo na spyasht chovek [To Kill a Sleeping Man] (1992), Elegichen optimizam [Elegiac Optimism] (1993), Repetitsiya za Gala Tants. Izbrano [Rehearsing for a Gala Dance. Selected Works] (1994), Spasenie [Salvation] (1995), Spomen za straha [Recalling Fear] (1998), Otdavna... [Along Time Ago...] (1998), Zapiski. 1970-1993 [ Notes: 1970-1993] (2000), Nadpyavane [Singing Contest] (2002). The feature films that he has written scripts for have unconventional aesthetic ambience: Spomen za bliznachkata [Remembering Her Twin Sister] (1976), Chuy petela [Hark, the Cock Crows] (1978), Ilyuziya [Illusion] (1980), Byala magiya [White Magic] (1982), Masovo chudo [Mass Miracle] (1984), Zla pamet [Evil Memory] (1985), Bez draskotina [Not a Scratch] (1986), Seltseto [The Village] (1989), Neshto vav vazduha [Something in the Air] (1989), Sadbata kato plah [Destiny as a Rat] (2001).

Konstantin Pavlov was awarded the National Nikola Furnadzhiev Prize in Poetry (2000), the National Hristo G. Danov Prize in Literature (2005) for his contribution to Bulgarian poetry and drama and to the development of civil society in this country, and the National Ivan Nikolov Prize in Poetry.

Several collections of Konstantin Pavlov’s poems have been published in English in Ludmilla Popova-Wightman’s translation.
